The Scandinavian Spring brings Light but no Greens!

The waiting is like a season in between.

This piece from my “Works on Paper 2025” series captures that unique transitional moment we experience in Scandinavian spring – when light returns but our landscape hasn’t yet dressed itself in green.

I created this work with dry pastels and pigment on premium paper, building layers of deep blues and teals that gradually lighten toward a luminous horizon. You’ll notice how the painting divides into three distinct zones: the heavy sky above in rich blue-gray tones, a brilliant band of yellow-white light cutting across the center like the low northern sun, and the reflective depths below that mirror the sky’s moody palette.

My Artistic Process

This is a time when I enjoy diving into the beautiful grayish-blue color tones through mixing layers of colors. The horizontal bands emerged naturally as I worked, echoing the flat Nordic landscape where sky and earth meet in an endless line. That bright central band captures the particular quality of spring light here – intense yet distant, promising but not yet warming.

To feel connected to here and now, I bring the season into my home by changing a painting and color mood. This work invites you to do the same – to appreciate the unique beauty found in anticipation and the in-between moments.
